PRINCETON—Gibson General Hospital CEO Emmett Schuster and the hospital’s general surgeon, Dr. Phillip Rosett, both agree with a recent report that shows critical access hospitals like the one in Princeton’s facility measure favorably to larger hospitals for many common operations.

A June report in the American College of Surgeons Surgery News says that a review of a national Medicare database over a four-year period from more than a million patients in larger hospitals and smaller facilities show that the number of serious complications over that time period were lower at the smaller critical access hospitals.

Rosett and Schuster said patients can have many procedures such as laparoscopic hernia repair and other surgeries at the local hospital, stay closer to home and experience quicker recovery.

The hospital plans to recruit a new orthopedic surgeon and is exploring expansion of other general surgical procedures, many that require only a short stay. “They can have top quality care in their own back yard and drive home,” said Rosett.

They said last week the hospital is also exploring feasibility of offering bariatric surgery for obesity in the future.

Schuster said the hospital is committed to providing quality care focused on community health needs.

The hospital offers a 24-hour emergency facility, hospitalists working with primary care physicians for inpatient care, outpatient surgical facility and a 22-bed inpatient unit for medical/ surgical patients; behavioral health programs on an outpatient basis, employee assistance programs and business health services; home health services; radiology, sleep diagnostic services, StarOne rehabilitation services, skilled nursing facility, a wellness clinic and other programs.

The hospital commissioned the Indiana Rural Health Association to conduct a comprehensive community health needs assessment in 2015 as one method of prioritizing local health care needs.
