PRINCETON — Tuesday was Gibson County Councilman Craig Pflug's birthday, but smiled and deferred to his colleague Bill McConnell, who got a round of applause when he confirmed he celebrated his 96th birthday Nov. 1.
McConnell, a World War II Navy veteran, former Princeton mayor and longtime county council member, may hold the local record as the most senior elected official, still active as ever.
McConnell confirmed he got more than 100 birthday greetings.
"That makes an old man feel like he's doing pretty good," he said Tuesday morning. "I'll try to do you a good job. Sometimes I'm a little contrary — it's gonna continue," he grinned.
The fiscally conservative Republican held true to form later in the meeting, berating the notion of state-mandated action to reduce overcrowding and upgrade staffing at the Gibson County Jail. "This is an imposition on us and other counties," he said, warning later in the discussion that if unfunded mandates continue, "then I'm going to be hard to get along with."
