OVERLAND PARK, Kansas -- Max Beatty, 88, Overland Park, Kansas, passed away Monday, Jan. 22, 2018 at the Olathe Hospice House surrounded by family.
Max grew up in Oakland City, eldest child of Adrian (Dutch) and Monzell Beatty. After high school he enlisted in the Navy serving as a diesel engineer during the Korean War. Returning home, Max met Marvelene, his caring wife of 58 years, while swimming at Plafflin Lake. They married in 1955. After earning a bachelor of arts degree from University of Evansville in 1961 and a master of arts degree in theater design at Indiana University in 1963, Max and family moved to Kansas City.
Max was professor and scenic designer in the theater department at UMKC from 1963 to 1993. He designed over 90 stage productions and worked with the Missouri Repertory Theater as well as other cultural organizations. Max also enjoyed performing in plays, collecting antiques and singing in the choir at Leawood Baptist Church.
Max is preceded in death by his wife, Marvelene and daughter Marla Carpenter, his sisters Adra (Peewee) and Bonnie and his brother David (Bud). He is survived by his four sons: Michael, Mitchel, Martin and Mathew, three grandchildren as well as spouses, great-grand children, loving nieces and extended family.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 10 at Leawood Baptist Church, 8200 State Line Road, Leawood, Kansas.
