OAKLAND CITY — Wood Memorial High School's first Champions Together program launched during the 2016-17 school year has earned the school the distinction as a Indiana High School Athletic Association and Special Olympics Indiana's Unified Champion School.
The program is a partnership between the two athletic organizations, and the Unified Champion School designation is established to recognized schools that embrace the partnership, do exemplary work in areas of student leadership, respect for persons with intellectual disabilities, inclusion, Unified Sports participation and fundraising to support Special Olympics goals.
Wood Memorial, led by the Principal's Student Advisory Council, earned the designation by organizing and hosting a school assembly to introduce the initiative, hosting a basketball game featuring Gibson County Special Olympics athletes and raising money for Indiana Special Olympics through several events.
Members of the 2016-17 student advisory council are Chloe Bartley, Carsen Robinson, Sydney Day, Taylor Pflug, Katie Thacker, Kayla Stocker, Brenna Maikranz, Cameron Houchins, Logan Hensley, Morgan Loveless, Katie Miley, Spencer Vickers, Cassidy Saulmon, Alexis Passwaiter, Kylie Hicks, Veronica Bittner, Taylor Andis, Cassidy McIntosh and Kendal Maikranz.
Members of the 2017-18 council are Walker Nurrenbern, Bailey Booker, Remington Wilkison, Jake Price, Kieonna Crow-Burkhart, Lexi Lashbrook, Aleah Moore, Emma Reel, Jenna McGowan, Cori Pflug, Kennedy Wilkinson and Ethan Phillips.
