PRINCETON — The April 4 jury trial for an Oakland City man charged with manslaughter in connection with his father’s death has been canceled.
Gibson Superior Court Judge Robert Krieg vacated the trial date after defendant Colin J. Cooper appeared Monday with defense attorney Ivan Arnaez, who reported parties are trying to work toward resolution of the case.
Arnaez said he believes it would be in the best interest of Cooper, who is free on $7,500 cash bond, to be placed back on home detention. Judge Krieg granted the motion and ordered Cooper to be placed on home detention as a condition of the pretrial services program.
A status hearing is scheduled for April 24.
Cooper is charged with a level 2 felony count of voluntary manslaughter in connection with the December 2020 shooting death of Calvin L. Cooper, 44, of Oakland City. The charge carries a potential sentence of 10 to 30 years in prison.
Cooper was arrested following the 911 call to his Oakland City home, reporting a shooting.
Police said Colin Cooper and his father were in an altercation inside the home when Cooper shot his father.

Indiana State Police investigator Weston Kuykendall reported in an affidavit seeking the charge that a witness told police Calvin Cooper was taunting his son and attempting to provoke a fight because Colin Cooper would not allow his girlfriend to come to his father’s house. According to the affidavit, the witness said that as things got more heated, Colin Cooper grabbed a shotgun, pointed it down toward his father and fired it once.
According to the affidavit, Colin Cooper used his phone to call 911.
Police reported Cooper told them that his father began shoving him and he remembered throwing the base of a coffee table toward his father to create more distance and stop the fight.
Cooper told police his father was below him at that point, but kept swinging his arm to grab one of his legs when he reached for a shotgun propped against the couch.
“He described using his right hand to grab the shotgun, swinging it toward his father’s back and pulling the trigger once,” police reported in the affidavit.
Colin Cooper described the fear he had of his father and said he had been injured before when the two had fought, according to the affidavit.
