EVANSVILLE — Darrell Smith, 70, of Evansville, passed away Sunday, Jan. 5, 2020, at Deaconess Midtown Hospital.

Darrell was born in Gibson County on June 6, 1949, to Dorris and Mary Louise Smith.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and retired from Azteca Milling after many years of service.

Darrell is survived by his children, Julia Lee of Owensville, Jalia Pegram of Owensville, Jeff Smith, Joseph Smith of Mt. Carmel, Illinois, James Smith and Jonathon Smith; siblings, Fred Smith (Margie) of Tolar, Texas, Danny Smith (Mary Beth) of Princeton, Georgia Schurmeier (Kent) of Princeton, Stacy Wilderman (Mike) of Kentucky, Matt Smith (Brenda) of Princeton, and Angie Mattingly (Keith) of Newburgh; and many grandchildren.

Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Jean (Tipton) Hammond; his parents; and a sister, Sharron Williams.

A celebration of Darrell's life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2020, at Golden Living Center Brentwood, 30 E. Chandler, Evansville, IN 47713. Burial will be held at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery.
