Excerpts from stories published in the Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 1898 editions of The Princeton Clarion:
WHY NOT HAVE A GYM?
We are pleased to learn that there is every prospect that Princeton will, in a short while, have a first-class gymnasium and that an athletic association, composed of ladies and gentlemen, will be formed to take instructions in health-giving and invigorating athletic exercises on a scientific plan.
The author of this plan is Mr. John U. Beckeman, foreman of the erecting department of the Air-line machine shops. Besides being an expert machinist, Mr. Beckeman is an athlete of considerable notoriety. He is the champion 125 pound wrestler of America and wears many elegant medals which he has one in contests.
He intends to secure rooms as son as possible and furnish them in a suitable manner. He will then invite a number of prospective pupils and will give instruction in wrestling. From this wrestling class, he expects to develop a regularly outfitted gymnasium and a high-class athletic club.
Mr. Beckeman is a German, but unlike many of his nationality, uses no liquors of any kind, no tobacco and no cards. Being this sort of a moral man it can be readily seen that he would conduct this institution with strict regard for propriety.
WILL NOT LOCATE HERE
The boot and shoe firm that was to have moved here from Champaign, Illinois, to embark in business, will not do so at present. A suitable room could not be found and they were wired to the effect, as the stock was being prepared for shipment. The move may be made later.
GOES TO KANSAS CITY
John R. Mitchell, the veterinary surgeon of Evansville, has received the appointment of United States meat inspector with headquarters at Kansas City, Missouri.
John is a former Princeton boy and his many friends will congratulate him on his appointment
ARRESTED BY U.S. MARSHAL
Our Oakland City correspondent makes a brief reference to the arrest of Dr. Woodruff of that place by a U.S. marshal and of his being taken to Evansville.
Dr. Woodruff’s many friends will regret to hear of his being in this difficulty and they will be slow to believe that he has been guilty of any intentional wrong, or has willfully and knowingly committed and illegal act.
The warrant upon which Dr. Woodruff was arrested last night charges him with having forged and altered two affidavits in the pention claim of Eliza Skelton, a widow of a soldier who resides in Oakland City.
It is said that there are over 50 of the claims filed by Dr. Woodruff now under investigation by the pension bureau.
OWENSVILLE GLEANER
• A lady of our town is teaching her chickens to cackle in Dutch. Thinks they will produce sauer kraut instead of eggs.
CITY ITEMS
• Thomas H. Maxam is here from Maxam station looking after Center township matters
• One hundred and three applicants for teachers’ licenses were examined at County Superintendent Ballard’s office Saturday.
DRY GOODS FIRMS ASSIGN
The firm of E.E. Sharp & Co. in this city failed, and also the Fort Branch firm of Griffin & Sharp, involving with it the branch store at King station. This triple assignment was the cause of much discussion and many expressions of regret were heard on every hand.
A meeting of the members of the firms and their attorneys, together with other interested parties, was held and the necessary lgal action was taken to appoint L.C. Embree assignee for the stock of E.E. Sharp & Co. and J.A. West assignee for the two stores of Griffin & Sharp. The estimate of the liabilities for the Princeton firm is $10,000 with the assets amounting to about $9,000.
The liabilities of Griffin & Sharp’s stores are placed at $15,000 with assets at $13,000. It is the intention to dispose of the E.E. Sharp & Co. stock at wholesale, but the Fort Branch and King station stocks will likely be sold out at retail.
