Heading into Thursday evening's Big Eight Conference Track and Field Meet, Princeton Community boys coach Bill Niederhaus wanted to focus on two things.

Knowing the talent of Jasper could not be matched, the veteran Tigers coach wanted to escape the meet with no further injuries and get his team prepared for Tuesday night's sectional.

The Wildcats ran away with the team title as they amassed 179 points, while the Tigers placed second with a distant 97 points, while Boonville was third with 79.

"We have had a lot of injuries, and people are still coming back," Niederhaus explained. "But for us to come out here and get second tonight, I thought we ran really well. Everyone stepped up tonight.

"Jasper has incredible depth and a lot of great athletes so we knew they were going to win. But Boonville has a great team too so for us to finish ahead of them, I could not ask for anything more from our team."

A trio of seniors paved the way for the Tigers.

Zach Dove and Jackson Krieg both came away with a pair of blue ribbons while Stephan Wilkerson added a single blue ribbon.

Dove broke his own school record in winning the discus with a heave of 162 feet, 9 inches. The record came on his final attempt.

"Each meet I just go out with the goal to break the record again," the University of Evansville signee said. "I was just ready to go today."

Dove broke the school record in the shot put last week during the Gibson County meet and although he did not break it again on Thursday, he still won the event with a top throw of 52-2½.

"I had not been throwing in the 50's consistently until today, so I was happy with that," Dove said. "But being the conference champ in two events is just awesome. I love winning and being able to help my team win."

Krieg crossed the finish line in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters.

The Indiana State University bound runner posted a winning time of 4 minutes, 29.26 seconds as he held off a late charge from Jasper's Jackson Miller (4:29.81).

In the two-mile race, Krieg finished with a time of 10:20.49 -- 13 seconds ahead of Jasper's Drew O'Neil.

Wilkerson won the high jump by clearing 6-0, while teammate Matt Dove placed second as he cleared 5-08 despite only competing in the event for the second time.

Wilkerson also finished third in the long jump with a best mark of 20-7 ¾.

Boonville's Devin Mockobee set the conference record in the long jump with a winning leap of 22-09. Mockobee also won both hurdle races.

Tiger hurdler Cole Hurt also had a good day.

Hurt picked up a pair of ribbons with a runners-up finish in the 110 hurdles (15.76) and third place in the 300 hurdles (42.54). Teammate Miles Carey placed fifth in the 110's with a time of 16.66.

Miles Bostick placed second in the 200 with a time of 23.88, while fellow sprinter Marcus Scisney placed fifth in the 100 with a time of 11.97.

Niederhaus felt like the Tigers missed out on a sixth first-place finish.

The quartet in the 400 meter relay had the top seed time entering the event but they could not execute a handoff during the race and did not finish.

"They have really been working on their handoff's tonight they went for the perfect handoff and just could not get it," the Tigers coach said.

Princeton's 3,200 relay team knocked two seconds off their season-best time and finished third (9:09.27), while the 1,600 relay team finished sixth with a time of 3:51.40.

"Now we get ready for sectional next week," Niederhaus stated. "It should be a fun meet with South Knox and Gibson Southern...hopefully we can sneak in there somewhere."

Princeton will host the boys and girls sectional at Tiger Stadium. The girls sectional is Tuesday evening with the boys sectional on Thursday.
