FORT BRANCH — Without standout senior Evan Birch, Gibson Southern was defeated by Washington 5-0 on Tuesday night.

The Hatchets swept the Titans in each of the five varsity matchups, headlined by Bryce Simpson in the No. 1 spot filling in for Birch.

Gibson Southern’s Dawson Maurer and Issac Merrell had arguably the closest match of the day, as Maurer and Merrell won the first set 6-4 over Washington’s Caleb Armstrong and Jaylyn Brook. Armstrong and Brook bounced back though, defeating Maurer and Merrell 6-2, 6-2 in the ensuing two sets to steal the match.


No. 1 — Zachary Gray (W) def. Bryce Simpson (GS) 6-0, 6-2.

No. 2 — Braden Kixmiller (W) def. Elliot Church (GS) 6-2, 6-0.

No. 3 — Owen Gray (W) def. Landon Kiesel (GS) 6-0, 6-3.


Caleb Armstrong/Jaylyn Brook (W) def. Issac Merrell/Dawson Maurer 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

Gunner Jones/Brycen Neidigh (W) def. Logan McClain/Carson Brindle 6-2, 7-5.

In jayvee action the Hatchets also defeated the Titans, this time 4-0.


Jayden Rook (W) def. Oliver Hamilton (GS) 8-3.

Elijah Parsons (W) def. Wyatt McElhiney (GS) 8-6.

Logan Riester/Hunter Walls (W) def. John Kiesel/Kyle Stunkel (GS) 8-5.

Eli Newberry/Alex Myers (W) def. Ezra Pohl/Isaiah Ralph 8-1.

The Titans will look to bounce back on Thursday, Sept. 17 as they travel to face Tecumseh at 4:30 p.m. They’ll follow that with a home match on Saturday against Evansville Reitz beginning at 10 a.m.
